Origin of the name SCHUMMER

Etymologically, the patronymical name SCHUMMER is derivated from an old german surname meaning worthless fellow, scamp, vagabond (cf.: Revue Française de la Généalogie #105 - August/September 1996).
The Rev. Paul Marie MEIER from Luxembourg gives us following precisions :
"The SCHUMMER are originating from AUSTRIA-HUNGARY. They came to the Grand-Duché of Luxembourg during the war of Thirty Years (1618-1648) as soldiers. They lived in the castles of Vianden and Esch-sur-Sûre. The name SCHUMMER gives an information about a military career. In effect in the language of Eastern countries, SCHUMMER means warden, keeper or sentinel."
